The Pavilion ~1920
Then....
We have all seen pictures of the Pavilion but this particular shot brings together a lot of Higgins history. In addition to the unpaved streets, check out the water tower which was actually located on Pearl Street...or how about the tent beside the main structure. Tents were a common sight in the early days as land owners would most likely be saving up to build a cottage. Beyond the tent you can make out the Green Bean cottage which is still with us.
The name "Johnson's Pavilion" may not be that familiar to you, but Alice and Burt Johnson bought this property from Edward Higgins in 1912. We believe that the Johnsons built and operated the pavilion until they sold the property to William Keenan in 1925.
Now.....
The original pavilion was torn down and replaced by two "Cape style" houses. They apparently didn't fit the "image" of beach cottages, so they sat empty for six or seven years.
